Portuguese telecom operator Nos has successfully conducted pilot tests for a hybrid communication system designed for maritime cold chain tracking. This innovative solution integrates Nos’s 5G network with nanosatellites from Fossa Systems, allowing for real-time cargo monitoring at sea. Collaborating with the Portuguese IoT company CapTemp, the system is engineered to seamlessly switch between 5G connectivity in coastal areas and satellite coverage in deeper waters.

The hybrid system continuously tracks essential parameters such as temperature and humidity within shipping containers throughout their maritime journey. By maintaining constant oversight of these critical factors, the technology aims to enhance the safety and quality of goods transported over long distances.
