Footage captured the dramatic rescue of a solo sailor just before his yacht sank in the Bristol Channel. RNLI volunteer crews from Porthcawl and The Mumbles were dispatched after receiving an alert about the vessel that had run aground. A lifeboat was launched shortly after 15:00 BST on August 28, navigating towards the sandbank. Despite challenging conditions, the crew faced difficulties in locating the yacht initially, as radar proved ineffective.
The situation changed when the sailor fired a red flare, allowing the rescue teams to spot him. Upon arrival, crews discovered the yacht had taken on a significant amount of water. Recognizing the urgency, they decided to send a crew member aboard to assist. It soon became apparent that the sailor needed to be evacuated quickly, and he was transferred to the lifeboat just moments before the yacht sank.
Once a second crew arrived, the sailor was safely brought to shore at Swansea. The RNLI emphasized the importance of being prepared for challenging conditions in the Bristol Channel and commended the sailor for having multiple means to call for help, as well as the necessary safety equipment. They also provided water safety advice and urged individuals to contact emergency services if they encounter trouble in the water.
