IFC Warns of Increasing Cyber Attacks Using AIS Deceptive Tactics

In June 2026, the Information Fusion Centre (IFC) reported 40 cyber security (CYBSEC) incidents within its Area of Responsibility (AOR). All incidents involved vessels that transmitted misleading information via Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals. This deceptive activity included false vessel names, flags, and types, aiming to mislead maritime observers about the vessels’ identities and purposes.

The IFC highlighted that AIS-related information deception is a prevalent issue in the region. With advancements in reporting processes and detection mechanisms, authorities anticipate an increase in the number of identified incidents as more cases come to light. However, despite the uptick in reported CYBSEC activities, there were no incidents involving damage to underwater telecommunications cables or any threats to maritime cyberspace in June.

This rise in reported incidents coincides with a shift in the IFC’s CYBSEC reporting methodology, which was implemented in January 2026. The center transitioned from a method-centric approach to a target-centric focus, enhancing the categorization and analysis of regional cyber security threats. This evolution in reporting aims to provide a clearer understanding of the challenges facing maritime security.
