Finnish green tech company Langh Tech has introduced a new onboard carbon capture system as part of its exhaust gas treatment solutions for ships. This system has a unique feature that allows for the sale and utilization of sodium carbonate produced during the chemical process. In a pilot test on a Langh Ship vessel, the system demonstrated capture rates of over 80% from exhaust gas flow, leading to a potential reduction of CO2 emissions by 20-30% depending on ship specifications.
The first commercial installations of Langh Tech’s onboard carbon capture system are set to take place in early 2025 on four bulk carriers being constructed by Damen Shipyards Group. These ships will be equipped with a hybrid scrubber and the additional carbon capture system. This initiative is part of a larger project involving Atal Solutions, BAM Shipping, and Damen Shipyards Group, aimed at retrofitting ships with various technologies to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of CO2, SOx, and NOx.
Langh Tech’s onboard carbon capture system works by directing a ship’s exhaust gases containing CO2 into a capture unit where it dissolves into a liquid phase through a NaOH solution. The resulting sodium carbonate can be utilized in various industries, making it a valuable byproduct. Compared to other carbon capture technologies, Langh Tech’s system offers advantages such as reduced energy consumption, simplified operation processes, and flexibility in adaptation to different ship types.
