Paradip Port Authority (PPA) initiated an emergency response for the MT SEAGULL 9, a tanker carrying 9,000 MT of crude palm oil, after it reported a main engine failure 35 nautical miles from Paradip Port. The incident, communicated by M/s Atlantic Global Shipping Pvt. Ltd. at 05:01 AM on September 27, 2026, indicated water ingress in the ballast tanks that caused the vessel to list by 10 degrees.
By 10:33 AM, the deployment of a PPA harbour tug, piloted by an experienced Master FG Certificate holder, was authorized. Preparations for the operation involved supplying the tug with necessary equipment and resources from 10:30 AM to 1:40 PM. The Harbour Tug Dolphin 25 began its journey at 1:40 PM and reached the tanker by 5:24 PM. After assessing the situation, towing commenced shortly after.
Thanks to effective coordination among PPA, the Indian Coast Guard, and other stakeholders, MT SEAGULL 9 was safely towed into Paradip harbour on September 28, 2026, and secured at NQ2 with minimal engine assistance. Capt. A.C. Sahoo oversaw the operation, and PPA Chairperson Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit commended all involved for their professionalism and prompt actions in ensuring the safe arrival of the vessel.
