The Iranian-supported Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has launched a presence on X, reflecting Tehran’s efforts to assert authority over commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The new account, “PGSA_Iran,” introduced itself as the official channel for providing real-time updates on operations within this vital maritime passage. In its inaugural post, the PGSA proclaimed itself as the representative authority of Iran for managing transit through the Strait, underscoring that navigation in these waters now requires “full coordination” with Iranian authorities.
The announcement has raised alarms within the shipping industry, as it indicates Iran’s intention to establish a controlled transit regime through this critical energy corridor. Following increased tensions related to the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, commercial traffic has plummeted, with numerous vessels stranded due to missile threats and insurance issues. Reports suggest shipowners are being instructed to contact the PGSA before transiting, sending shockwaves through the maritime community due to concerns over safety and legal implications of engaging with Iranian authorities.
Despite Tehran’s assurances of “safe, stable passage” under new protocols, many shipowners remain skeptical. They refrain from resuming operations, citing a history of unfulfilled promises. As international shipping remains at risk, maritime security advisories continue to caution about threats such as sporadic attacks and GPS interference in the Strait of Hormuz.
