Karin Orsel, a prominent maritime entrepreneur and CEO of the MF Shipping Group, has been selected to receive the 2025 IMO Gender Equality Award for her significant contributions to advancing gender equality and empowering women in the shipping industry. The IMO Council endorsed Orsel as the recipient during its 133rd session in London. The award ceremony is scheduled for May 2025, coinciding with the International Day for Women in Maritime. Orsel’s dedication to positive change, authenticity, and courage in advocating for diversity and inclusion has been recognized by the assessment panel.

Orsel’s career in the maritime industry began at a young age, and she co-founded the MF Shipping Group at 23. Under her leadership, the company has grown significantly, managing a fleet of over 55 vessels and emphasizing an inclusive culture by recruiting diverse talent and supporting initiatives promoting diversity in maritime. Orsel has held leadership positions in various maritime organizations, including WISTA International and the European Community Shipowners’ Association, advocating for gender equality, seafarer welfare, and sustainability measures in the industry.

In addition to recognizing Orsel, the IMO Council awarded Letters of Commendation to individuals such as Flavia Takafashi, Captain Chunpei Zhan, Katy Ware, Elvia Adelina Bustavino Cedeño, and Jung Min for their remarkable contributions to women’s empowerment in the maritime sector. The IMO Gender Equality Award aims to acknowledge individuals who have made significant strides in advancing gender equality and empowering women in the maritime industry. Nominations for the award are carefully considered by an Assessment Panel comprising various maritime organizations and entities.
