The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced plans to evacuate thousands of sailors from the Middle East, following a recent agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at restoring peace and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez confirmed on Tuesday that the evacuation will involve over 11,000 seafarers currently stranded in the region.
This extensive operation will be executed in collaboration with Iran, Oman, and other Gulf nations, as well as the United States and the shipping industry. Dominguez emphasized that all necessary security guarantees have been secured and that maritime security conditions have been thoroughly assessed to support the operation.
In his statement, Dominguez condemned the attacks on civilian shipping and expressed condolences for the 14 sailors who lost their lives during the ongoing conflict that began on February 28. The IMO’s coordinated efforts aim not only to ensure the safety of seafarers but also to stabilize maritime operations in a region that has been significantly affected by hostilities.
