Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasized the need for immediate measures to dismantle barriers hindering women’s involvement in the maritime sector. Speaking at the 8th Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Africa Regional Conference in Lagos, Oyetola highlighted the theme, “From Policy to Progress: Women Delivering Africa’s Shipping and Trade Energy Future.” He was represented by Kalthum Ibrahim, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics in the ministry.
Oyetola acknowledged the significant contributions women are already making to the maritime industry, urging for the removal of obstacles that limit their participation. He stressed the importance of fostering partnerships that empower women to excel in the industry and called for investments in skill development, technological advancements, and regional cooperation.
Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of WISTA Nigeria, also addressed the conference, advocating for stronger collaboration among governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders. She emphasized that Africa’s blue economy holds vast potential for enhancing trade corridors and economic prosperity, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of NIMASA, reiterated the agency’s commitment to gender inclusion and sustainable growth within the maritime sector, stating that collaboration among various stakeholders is crucial for unlocking Africa’s maritime potential.
