Maersk Plans Full Suez Canal Transit Restoration by March 2027
Maersk anticipates that all its shipping services will resume transiting through the Suez Canal by March 2027, as communicated by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). This projection stems from discussions between SCA executives and senior representatives from Maersk, although it remains an expectation rather than a confirmed schedule. The timeline for individual service changes has not yet been provided, and the resumption of services will be influenced by regional security conditions.
The SCA reported a significant increase in Maersk-affiliated vessel transits in 2026, with a total of 276 transits between January and September, marking an 89% rise from 2025. In light of this, Maersk is actively reviewing its sailing schedules, aiming to facilitate more services through the Suez Canal in the near future. However, specific dates for the return of particular services have not been disclosed.
The potential full return of Maersk to the Suez Canal could lead to shorter transit times between Asia and Europe, alleviating the current vessel capacity utilized for the longer Cape of Good Hope route. This change may also exert pressure on freight rates, which have surged amid regional tensions, but the timing of this transition remains contingent upon security developments in the area.
