This initiative will be achieved through enhanced training programs, professional certification, and hands-on experience aboard vessels. Oyetola made this announcement on his X account, following the observance of World Maritime Day 2026, where he discussed efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime sector and leverage its marine and blue economy.

During the World Maritime Day celebration, Oyetola emphasized the government’s initiatives to modernize ports, bolster maritime security, and invest in fisheries and aquaculture. These efforts aim to generate employment, increase productivity, and enhance food security across the nation. He also highlighted a significant increase in fish production, which rose from 1.1 million to 1.4 million metric tonnes in 2025, attributing this growth to responsible aquaculture practices, improved processing methods, and better market access.
