The global shipping sector is exercising caution following recent statements from both Washington and Tehran asserting that the Strait of Hormuz is “open.” While Iran has officially declared the waterway accessible for commercial traffic in light of the ceasefire in Lebanon, concerns remain about the actual conditions at sea. President Trump also echoed this sentiment, announcing the Strait is “fully open and ready for full passage.” However, Iran’s conditions specify that vessels must follow a coordinated route along its coastline, diverging from the internationally recognized Traffic Separation Scheme.

Industry representatives indicate that the reality for shipowners is far more complicated than political declarations suggest. There are unresolved threats from underwater mines, existing military controls, and increasing U.S. enforcement actions targeting Iran-related commerce. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the UN’s International Maritime Organization, stated that the organization is verifying the compliance of recent announcements with established maritime navigation protocols.

Both BIMCO and INTERTANKO have expressed skepticism regarding the claims of a fully open Strait. They warn of legal and security risks tied to Iran’s proposed transit arrangements, notably that payments to Iranian authorities may expose vessels to U.S. sanctions. Operators are advised to assess the risks carefully and consider avoiding the area until more reliable guidance is provided. Despite a ceasefire holding since April 7, the dual nature of oversight from both Iranian and U.S. forces has created a murky operational landscape for shipping through this vital corridor.
