In a recent industry analysis released on September 8, 2026, satellite connectivity provider Ground Control highlighted the operational risks posed to commercial maritime navigation by ongoing interference with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Ground Control’s CEO, Alastair MacLeod, emphasized the shift in maritime navigation threats from traditional signal denial to more sophisticated signal deception tactics, particularly through GPS and GNSS spoofing.
Data from early 2026 revealed over 1,700 instances of GNSS interference in the Strait of Hormuz, with more than 1,100 vessels reporting inaccurate inland coordinates within a single day. A study by the Royal Institute of Navigation found that 75% of mariners surveyed believe that GNSS interference is either remaining at high levels or worsening. Unlike conventional jamming, which disrupts signals and triggers immediate alerts, spoofing manipulates positioning data, allowing compromised receivers to provide misleading but plausible location information. This deception can lead vessels into dangerous or disputed waters.
Ground Control’s analysis coincides with its introduction of hybrid satellite-cellular telemetry hardware, aimed at maintaining communication links during terrestrial network outages. MacLeod pointed out the challenges posed by spoofing, which can mislead navigation systems while appearing credible. He noted the importance of independent positioning solutions to enhance satellite navigation reliability.
To address these challenges, maritime security experts advocate for immediate implementation of multi-sensor positioning systems. These systems should integrate traditional GNSS with inertial navigation, dead reckoning sensors, and terrestrial radio positioning to ensure accurate location verification in contested environments, providing vessel operators with more resilient navigation capabilities.
