Wind propulsion will make a significant impact at the upcoming Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair, scheduled for September 1-4, 2026, in Hamburg. This event highlights the rapid growth of wind-assisted and primary wind propulsion technologies, which are becoming vital for shipowners aiming to reduce fuel consumption and meet stricter emissions regulations. The number of exhibitors showcasing these technologies will surpass previous years, reflecting the sector’s expanding commercial presence.
The SMM is expected to attract around 45,000 attendees, including shipowners, operators, and maritime decision-makers. Notably, 40 members of the International Windship Association (IWSA) will participate, emphasizing the increasing adoption of wind propulsion in the maritime industry. Currently, over 100 commercial vessels equipped with wind propulsion technology are in operation, marking a significant milestone with more than six million DWT of cargo capacity.
To assist attendees, the IWSA has created an unofficial Wind Propulsion Route for SMM 2026, guiding visitors to member exhibitors and key events. Alongside the exhibition, a variety of presentations, technical discussions, and networking opportunities will be available, allowing attendees to engage with innovators in wind propulsion technology.
