Intellian Technologies and Iridium Communications have introduced the C100M global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS), enhancing the Iridium Certus safety portfolio with a compact solution for shipboard distress communications. This new terminal complements Intellian’s existing C200M and C700 systems, solidifying the company’s position as the sole manufacturer offering a dedicated terminal across all Iridium Certus service tiers.
The C100M is designed for vessels seeking an easier retrofit option, supporting both coaxial and NMEA 2000 cabling. This feature allows shipowners to utilize existing legacy GMDSS antenna cables if they are in good condition, significantly reducing installation time and costs, particularly for operators modernizing older fleets. Additionally, the system eliminates the need for a separate below-deck unit, integrating all processing into the bridge-mounted Safety Control Unit.
Equipped with a 7-inch color IPS touch screen, the C100M ensures visibility in various lighting conditions and simplifies routine calls. It allows for one-touch communication with rescue coordination centers and nearby vessels during emergencies. For operators already utilizing C200M or C700 terminals, full SOLAS GMDSS compliance can be achieved by adding a Safety Display Terminal and handset, depending on regulatory requirements.
Intellian CEO Eric Sung emphasized that this all-in-one terminal offers mariners a modern upgrade path from older safety networks, ensuring critical global connectivity when needed. Iridium’s Wouter Deknopper highlighted the system’s ability to combine a global distress network with a streamlined GMDSS setup, providing backup connectivity alongside primary broadband systems.
