Korean Register (KR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new 50,000-cbm LPG carrier, developed in collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). This milestone was announced on September 16 during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. The design aims to meet the specific needs of the mid-size LPG carrier market, bridging the gap between existing 45K and 60K designs.
The new carrier emphasizes the importance of precise temperature and pressure control to maintain cargo stability throughout storage and transport. Achieving safety and efficiency in LPG transport requires advanced engineering throughout the vessel’s design and construction phases.
Featuring Type A independent tanks, the carrier ensures that LPG is stored separately from the ship’s hull, facilitating stable transport at low temperatures. This innovative design allows for greater adaptability to various cargo volumes and trading patterns, enhancing operational economics.
As part of the joint development, HHI was responsible for the concept and basic design, while KR conducted a thorough review to ensure compliance with international standards and gas carrier regulations before granting the AIP.
