K Shipbuilding and Lloyd’s Register (LR) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively develop a 50,000 dwt medium-range (MR) product tanker that utilizes ethanol as a marine fuel. The initiative was unveiled at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok and aims to explore the technical, safety, and regulatory aspects necessary for creating an ethanol-powered tanker, ultimately seeking Approval in Principle (AiP) from LR.
K Shipbuilding will handle the vessel’s design and development, while LR will conduct technical assessments covering essential components such as stability, structural requirements, and ethanol tank integration. The project also plans to enhance the vessel’s design and operational efficiency while ensuring compliance with classification mandates and international regulations.
The focus on ethanol aligns with the growing demand for alternative fuel solutions amid evolving environmental standards.
