Seaspan, a major vessel owner leasing to the container industry, is initiating a vessel upgrade program in collaboration with Maersk, committing at least $75 million to enhance 18 long-term chartered vessels. The program aims to improve efficiency by focusing on fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, operational flexibility, and emissions reduction.

A key highlight of this initiative is a high-impact retrofit solution for four 13,000 TEU vessels, marking a significant upgrade for the Seaspan-Maersk fleet. This retrofit includes installing a shaft generator to reduce auxiliary engine fuel consumption, optimizing main engine performance, and adding a new high-efficiency propeller. Additionally, a pre-swirl device will enhance propulsion efficiency, and the vessels will be prepared for future emissions regulations with carbon capture readiness.

Furthermore, the lashing bridge will be elevated to boost cargo capacity, while deadweight will be increased to improve loading capabilities. These upgrades are expected to reduce vessel slot costs by 10–13%, enhancing overall fuel efficiency and operational performance. In a related effort, Maersk and COSCO Shipyard have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Cooperation with WattSpan to focus on vessel performance and decarbonization solutions.

Seaspan has also completed its first conversion to methanol dual-fuel technology, part of a broader initiative with Hapag-Lloyd to retrofit five vessels this year. Hapag-Lloyd plans to modify over 100 container vessels by 2025 to enhance fuel efficiency and cargo capacity.
