SMD has delivered the first of two heavy-duty power cable ploughs to Prysmian for use on its new-generation cable laying vessels (CLVs), with the second set to arrive later this year. These ploughs will be deployed on the Prysmian Alessandro Volta and Prysmian Mona Lisa, designed to bury various types of power cables up to five meters beneath the seabed.
The collaboration merges Prysmian’s expertise in submarine cable design and installation with SMD’s capabilities in cable handling and plough design. Paul Davison, Deputy CEO at SMD, emphasized the significance of this technology for offshore grid connections, vital for linking renewable energy sources to industrial hubs across Europe. He noted that the quad bundles will facilitate connections from next-generation offshore wind farms, reducing the need for land cables and minimizing local disruption.
Peter Watson, UK Marine Base and VOO Manager at Prysmian, expressed pride in partnering with SMD to develop this advanced subsea plough, highlighting its potential to meet the challenges of demanding submarine projects. This collaboration underscores a commitment to innovation in the energy sector, ensuring reliable connections for future energy needs.
