Port of Riga Embarks on Maritime Communication Trials
The Port of Riga will become a testing ground for advanced maritime communication technologies through a new partnership between LVR Flote and HARDMODE. The two companies formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Techritory Forum. Their goal is to develop and trial communication systems capable of maintaining port operations during network failures and adverse conditions, with plans to assess these technologies in real-world port settings.
The initiative focuses on creating resilient communication systems that function even when traditional networks are compromised. HARDMODE aims to integrate various communication technologies, including mobile, non-terrestrial, tactical, and narrowband networks, ensuring that port equipment, sensors, vehicles, drones, and personnel remain interconnected. This decentralized approach facilitates direct information exchange between connected devices, enhancing operational efficiency.
Potential applications at the Port of Riga include infrastructure monitoring, hydrographic surveys, maintenance tasks, and navigation safety improvements. This project is particularly relevant given recent concerns about GNSS interference affecting maritime activities in the Baltic Sea region. LVR Flote’s technical expertise will help tailor the new technologies to meet the port’s specific needs.
Furthermore, the partnership plans to establish an open testing framework for other technology providers, inviting developers of monitoring systems, sensors, and digital port services to participate. While the collaboration holds promise for future developments in port technology, specific investment details and timelines for the trials have yet to be disclosed.
