False Ship Registries Putting Indian Seafarers at Risk, Warns Union

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India has urgently called on the International Maritime Organisation to address the issue of fraudulent ship registries that jeopardize mariners operating in conflict zones of the Persian Gulf. In a recent letter, the union highlighted the alarming fatalities among Indian crew members aboard vessels using false flags and inadequate insurance coverage. They demanded accountability from those engaging in deceptive practices that undermine safety and legal standards.

The union expressed concern over several vessels with fake registries that have endangered the lives of seafarers, particularly those operating in the Persian Gulf. These ships are often involved in shadow operations and are linked to sanctioned activities. The letter noted that at least three vessels had been detained in Mumbai due to fraudulent registration certificates and suspicious activities since early 2026.

One specific incident involved the MT Settebello, a vessel registered in Palau, which was attacked, resulting in the deaths of three Indian seafarers. The union revealed that the submitted P&I certificate for its flag registration was fraudulent, complicating compensation claims for the affected families. The growing prevalence of such fraudulent operations poses a serious threat to the safety of seafarers, with many vessels allegedly controlled by companies based in the UAE. The union urged the International Maritime Organisation to investigate the matter to protect seafarers and their families.
