Inmarsat Maritime, a subsidiary of Viasat, has launched an innovative Maritime Safety Data Hub that provides vital insights into maritime risks. This tool integrates three years of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) data with an analysis of nearly 107,000 maritime safety broadcasts, enabling industry stakeholders to better understand the factors affecting global shipping. The analysis reveals patterns related to extreme weather, operational challenges, and geopolitical factors that contribute to safety risks at sea.
The findings indicate that weather events are responsible for 84.6% of all urgent safety messages, with storms being the predominant hazard. By connecting safety broadcasts with GMDSS distress calls, the study highlights the crucial role that timely safety communications play in helping vessels prepare for and navigate potential weather-related hazards. This capability aligns with a broader recognition of the increasing operational complexities the shipping industry faces today, particularly due to extreme weather and evolving geopolitical dynamics.
John Dodd, Director of Maritime Safety at Inmarsat, emphasized the added intelligence this data hub provides, which allows the industry to transition from merely reacting to incidents to proactively addressing the underlying conditions that lead to them. Through the platform, users can explore data trends, assess maritime safety factors, and make informed operational decisions based on current threats, such as geopolitical tensions and emerging navigational hazards.
