Three seafarers have tragically lost their lives, and two others are still unaccounted for following the capsizing of a rescue boat during a recovery operation off the Southern Cape coast. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, approximately 47 nautical miles south of Mossel Bay. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) reported that the situation unfolded when a crew member fell overboard from the tugboat Umkhuseli while working on deck.
In response, a Fast Rescue Boat carrying four crew members was dispatched from the Umkhuseli to retrieve the individual, but it capsized, resulting in five crew members entering the water. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town promptly initiated a search and rescue operation, enlisting assistance from nearby vessels, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), and the South African Police Service’s water wing and helicopters. Three seafarers were recovered but were unfortunately confirmed deceased, while two remain missing.
AMSOL has resumed search and recovery operations with its tug Inkanyezi remaining on site. The company has been in direct contact with the families of the affected crew members, providing support and updates. Samsa has initiated a preliminary inquiry into the incident, and both internal and external investigations are underway. The maritime authority has expressed condolences to the families and appreciation to those involved in the rescue efforts. AMSOL is committed to continuing its support for the families and colleagues of the seafarers.
