Milan-based communications provider Seafy® is enhancing its onboard digital ecosystem with the introduction of Seafy P2T (Push-to-Talk), a system aimed at improving operational communication among crew members. This innovative solution transforms smartphones into push-to-talk devices linked to the vessel’s existing Wi-Fi network, allowing seamless communication across departments such as the bridge, engine room, and deck, even in the absence of an internet connection.
The P2T system operates entirely offline on board but can extend communications to other vessels and shore-based teams when external connectivity is available. This functionality supports ongoing coordination between ship and shore, addressing the critical need for efficient communication among crew members working in various areas of the vessel. Importantly, P2T serves as an additional layer for internal communications without replacing essential radio equipment like VHF and GMDSS.
The system architecture includes a server installed on the vessel that manages voice communications and user access locally. Crew members can use their smartphones to communicate via the iOS and Android app, which provides access to department-specific channels. Voice transmission is rapid, with under 100 milliseconds latency, and the system supports different priority levels for communications. Additionally, P2T maintains activity logs for traceability without recording conversations, ensuring that all communications are secure and linked to authorized users.
Seafy P2T is licensed per vessel, accommodating up to 1,000 users and offering configurations suitable for various types of vessels, from yachts to larger fleets. Shipping companies can initiate the process with a live demo, followed by tailored configuration to align with existing infrastructure and operational needs.
