A groundbreaking demonstration showcased the world’s first autonomous robot operating on a ship, highlighting its ability to navigate hazardous areas where crew access is challenging. The MobED platform, developed by Hyundai Motor and Kia, was tested aboard the multipurpose vessel HYUNDAI DUBAI in collaboration with Korean Register, HMM, and Goseong Engineering in Changwon, South Korea. The trial aimed to evaluate the robot’s reliability in a dynamic ship environment, which includes factors like vibration and changing surfaces.
During the demonstration, MobED successfully performed various navigation tasks within the vessel’s cargo area, such as straight and curved driving, low-speed and high-speed movements, as well as route learning. The robot’s independently controlled wheels enable stable movement across uneven surfaces and inclines, making it suitable for inspections and material transport in potentially hazardous conditions. Although the robot excelled in open areas, it required remote control in narrow passageways due to space constraints.
The partners involved emphasized the potential for autonomous robots to enhance safety during cargo hold inspections, particularly in environments with explosive or toxic materials. While the technology is still in the demonstration phase, ongoing efforts will focus on establishing safety standards and exploring further applications for smart ship operations.
