The United Kingdom has intensified its sanctions against Russia by introducing a new package targeting various sectors, including shipping, banking, and industry. This updated sanctions list includes six vessels linked to the transportation of Russian energy exports and an Indian ship management company. The changes were announced by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, which detailed 19 new designations within its Russia sanctions framework.
Among the key actions is the designation of the LNG carrier Arctic Express, accused of transporting Russian liquefied natural gas to third-party nations. Currently sailing under the Russian flag and operated by SMP Tech Management LLP, this vessel’s operations are now restricted. Similarly, Mumbai-based Frion Ship Management LLP has been sanctioned for allegedly facilitating the ship’s transfer to Russian control and now faces an asset freeze and other restrictions.
In addition to the Arctic Express, the UK has imposed sanctions on five oil tankers believed to have carried Russian crude. These vessels are barred from UK ports, can be detained, and are prohibited from being chartered by UK entities. The sanctions extend to Northern Engineering LLC and four other companies involved in supplying goods to Russia’s military efforts, as well as five Russian financial institutions subject to asset freezes. This comprehensive sanctions approach highlights the UK’s ongoing commitment to disrupting Russian energy exports amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
