The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has partnered with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to promote a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive global maritime transport system. This collaboration aims to address the pressing need for decarbonization in the maritime sector, which is crucial for enhancing environmental sustainability while ensuring efficient trade operations.
Ports are essential to global trade, managing over 80% of trade volumes worldwide. Despite their significance, they are also highly energy-intensive and reliant on fossil fuels. As the demand for modernization and reduced emissions grows, countries face the challenge of balancing efficiency with environmental responsibility. This partnership seeks to tackle these challenges head-on, paving the way for innovative solutions in port operations.
This agreement signifies a pivotal moment in UNCTAD’s ongoing work with Singapore, a key player in the global maritime landscape. The collaboration leverages Singapore’s operational strengths alongside UNCTAD’s expertise in global development, aiming to drive impactful changes in maritime transport practices.
Pedro Manuel Moreno, Acting Secretary-General of UNCTAD, emphasized the value of this partnership, stating that it combines Singapore’s operational excellence with UNCTAD’s development insights to foster progress in the maritime industry.
