The Mission to Seafarers Singapore (MtSS) has initiated a Centenary Appeal to secure funding for its essential welfare services as it celebrates 100 years of supporting seafarers in one of the world’s busiest ports. This fundraising initiative invites shipping companies, maritime organizations, churches, and individuals to contribute, ensuring the continuation of vital services that have evolved from a single chaplaincy to a comprehensive network providing ship visits, transport, and emergency welfare support.
Despite Singapore’s annual handling of over 140,000 vessels, MtSS currently assists around 20,000 seafarers each year, necessitating approximately S$950,000 annually to maintain and enhance its services. The funds generated through this appeal are critical for sustaining operations, expanding outreach, and establishing Singapore as a Key Welfare Hub in the region, particularly in areas like Tuas, where demand is increasing.
The launch of the appeal coincided with celebratory events, including a centennial dinner attended by industry leaders and dignitaries. Lars Kastrup, Chairman of the MtSS Management Committee, emphasized the importance of supporting seafarers who play a crucial role in global trade, urging the maritime community to contribute to the appeal. Jan Webber, Director of Development, reiterated the commitment to ensuring that no seafarer arriving in Singapore is forgotten, stressing the need for resources to meet growing demands.
As MtSS embarks on its next century, the Centenary Appeal aims to provide ongoing practical assistance and compassionate support to seafarers, ensuring a welcoming environment for generations to come.
