Kongsberg Maritime is spearheading an EU-backed initiative called AWESOME, aimed at accelerating the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion in shipping. The project intends to reduce uncertainties surrounding these systems by providing validated tools, standardised methods, and real-world performance data for shipowners and regulators.
AWESOME—short for Advanced Wind Energy System Optimisation & Monitoring for Efficiency—unites 15 European partners from various sectors of the maritime industry, including technology developers, shipowners, operators, and research institutions. The project will address design, simulation, onboard control, crew training, performance verification, and market entry, facilitating the easier assessment, installation, and operation of wind propulsion systems.
As fuel and emissions regulations tighten, shipowners are increasingly interested in wind propulsion but face challenges regarding performance and integration. AWESOME aims to gather empirical data from real operations, potentially shifting wind-assisted propulsion from niche applications to more widespread commercial use.
Kongsberg will coordinate the project, fostering collaboration among partners and ensuring the development of necessary tools. This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to decarbonise the maritime sector, positioning wind-assisted propulsion as a key element in the transition to greener shipping practices.
