The Indian Government, through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), has announced a new circular aimed at mitigating environmental risks linked to the maritime transport of plastic pellets. This initiative was reported by marine insurer NorthStandard on July 22.
Starting April 15, 2026, all vessels transporting plastic pellets to, from, or through Indian ports will be required to stow this cargo exclusively under deck, with any on-deck transportation strictly prohibited. This measure is designed to minimize the potential for environmental contamination.
Additionally, the circular mandates that the packaging of plastic pellets must adhere to standards that are at least equivalent to those set for dangerous goods under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. This requirement aims to enhance safety and prevent cargo losses during transit.
These regulatory changes reflect India’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns associated with plastic pollution and promoting safer shipping practices in its waters. The new guidelines are expected to bolster the protection of marine ecosystems while ensuring compliance with international shipping standards.
