Danish shortsea operator Baltic Shipping Company has expanded its fleet with two new Damen-built hybrid coasters, the Baltic Iron and Baltic Timber. Each vessel, with a deadweight tonnage of 3,550, is equipped with two Econowind VentoFoils designed to harness wind for supplementary propulsion, potentially reducing fuel consumption by up to 12%.
The VentoFoils generate aerodynamic thrust, decreasing the reliance on the vessels’ main engines, which in turn lowers fuel use and CO2 emissions. Additionally, the ships are outfitted with large battery packs, creating a hybrid propulsion system aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. Baltic Timber was the first to enter service, followed by Baltic Iron, both now operating under Baltic Shipping’s management for European shortsea trades.
Ronnie Hulstrøm, CEO of Baltic Shipping Company, emphasized that the combination of VentoFoils and battery technology marks a significant advancement in energy-efficient shipping, showcasing the potential of current technologies. He noted that these vessels also meet growing customer demands for reduced carbon footprints in maritime transport.
The addition of these hybrid coasters reflects a broader trend among shipowners to explore fuel-saving technologies while waiting for alternative fuels to become widely available. Baltic Shipping specializes in European shortsea shipping, managing around 95 dry cargo vessels.
