ClassNK has embarked on a collaborative project aimed at verifying the reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions achieved through an AI-based autonomous navigation system in real vessel operations. This initiative aligns with the maritime industry’s push for technologies that enhance operational efficiency and minimize environmental impact, particularly through voyage optimization and weather routing solutions.
The project will utilize the “Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS)” developed by Samsung Heavy Industries, along with meteorological data from Weathernews Inc. An actual vessel operated by Evergreen Marine Corporation will serve as the test subject, allowing for a detailed analysis of operational data and fuel consumption. ClassNK will ensure the objectivity and credibility of the findings by conducting a technical review of the verification methodology.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed among the four parties at Evergreen’s headquarters, establishing a cooperative framework for assessing the GHG reduction effects of the AI-driven technology. Each party has defined roles: Evergreen will provide the demonstration vessel and operational data; Samsung will manage the speed optimization algorithm and vessel control; Weathernews will supply weather forecasting data; and ClassNK will oversee the verification process and issue a Statement of Fact (SoF).
