Last week, the car carrier CMA CGM Monza suffered damage after colliding with a pier at the Bremerhaven port, near a decommissioned bridge site. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when the vessel, which was built in 2024, departed from its berth in Kaiserhafen Zwei. Due to windy conditions, the ship’s captain requested an additional tug for assistance as it navigated through the harbor.
As the Monza passed the former swing bridge location, which has since been removed, the harbor channel narrowed significantly. Despite the extra tug support, the strong winds caused the ship’s starboard side to strike the pier, resulting in an eight-foot-long gash in the hull. Fortunately, the damage was above the waterline, and there were no reports of pollution or injuries.
In response to the incident, Bremen’s water police have issued a sailing ban on the CMA CGM Monza and have initiated administrative actions against the vessel’s captain. As of Sunday evening, the ship remained docked in Bremerhaven’s inner harbor, pending further investigations.
