The captain of the container ship Single faced charges of gross negligence following a collision with an oil tanker, resulting in casualties among the crew. Vladimir Motin from St. Petersburg, Russia, was held responsible for the incident, which occurred off the coast of East Yorkshire, England. The collision involved the vessel Single and the tanker Stena Flawless, leading to a major emergency response and the loss of a crew member.
The impact between the two ships caused concern as the Stena Immaculate was carrying a large amount of Jet-A1 fuel. Despite the initial emergency, the risk to public health was deemed to be very low. Efforts to control fires on the Single are ongoing, with authorities monitoring the situation closely. An investigation involving multiple authorities is currently underway to determine the causes of the collision and assess factors such as navigation practices and environmental conditions.
Rescue experts from Smit have been called in to assess the damage to the Stena Flawless and develop a plan for salvage operations. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with US and Portuguese authorities, with the aim of understanding what led to the collision and improving safety measures for future maritime incidents. The maritime accident investigation team is examining data from the voyage recorder to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the collision.
