The captain of a Russian shadow fleet vessel intercepted by British commandos has been charged with violating sanctions, according to Britain’s National Crime Agency. Ajay Pant, an Indian national, faces allegations of “directly or indirectly supplying or delivering prohibited oil or oil products from Russia to a third country by ship,” the agency reported.

Pant is scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The interception occurred on Sunday when British commandos boarded the Smyrtos, a sanctioned Russian oil tanker flying a Cameroonian flag, while it was navigating the English Channel. Following the boarding, the tanker has been detained.

In response to ongoing conflicts, the UK has sanctioned nearly 600 vessels associated with Russia’s shadow fleet. These sanctions aim to disrupt Russia’s oil revenue, which plays a significant role in funding its military operations in Ukraine. The enforcement of these sanctions reflects the UK’s commitment to countering actions that undermine international stability and security.

This incident highlights the strategic efforts of the UK and its allies to monitor and control the maritime flow of resources used to support military actions.
