VINSSEN, a specialist in maritime decarbonization technology focusing on hydrogen fuel cells, has achieved Approval in Principle (AIP) certification from the Korean Register for Korea’s first tugboat with a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. This milestone was reached through a collaboration with KRE, a leader in ship design and maritime engineering. The project represents a significant advancement in applying eco-friendly technologies to high-emission vessels like tugboats, contributing to the industry’s sustainability efforts.
The 2,700 kW hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric tugboat developed by VINSSEN and KRE utilizes hydrogen fuel and stores excess electricity in batteries for low-load operations, ensuring energy readiness for future demands. The system combines fuel cell technology with battery energy storage for stable and efficient propulsion during peak-load scenarios. This eco-friendly propulsion system is designed to meet environmental regulations and deliver high performance in challenging marine conditions.
VINSSEN’s innovative approach extends beyond fuel cell technology, offering a holistic green solution that integrates battery energy storage systems. This development positions VINSSEN as a key player in advancing the decarbonization of the maritime industry and promoting sustainability in global maritime operations. The company plans to showcase its eco-friendly vessels and propulsion systems at Sea Asia 2025 in Singapore, highlighting its commitment to driving green initiatives in the maritime sector.
