The All Aboard Alliance has initiated a project called Unspoken, aimed at creating a global framework for addressing unwanted sexual behavior on vessels. The Alliance highlights that sexual misconduct at sea is both prevalent and largely unreported, with a 2025 report revealing that 80% of seafarers surveyed had either experienced or witnessed such offenses in the past five years.
Unspoken will collect personal accounts from seafarers regarding their experiences with sexual misconduct. These narratives will inform the development of the maritime industry’s first consistent framework to assess and respond to incidents appropriately. Mikael Skov, CEO of Hafnia and Co-Chair of the All Aboard Alliance, emphasized the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths to improve conditions for seafarers and make maritime careers more appealing.
Participants in Unspoken can anonymously share their stories, some of which will be published on the project’s website to raise awareness about the issue and challenge the prevailing silence. The data collected will enable the Alliance to better understand various forms of misconduct, evaluate incident responses, and enhance prevention strategies.
