Investigation Begins Into Virgo Transport 8 Ferry Captain’s Conduct in Fatal Incident

Authorities in Indonesia are investigating the captain of the Virgo Transport 8 ferry, which tragically capsized in the Java Sea last month, resulting in numerous fatalities. Initially managed by local police in South Kalimantan, the investigation has been escalated to the National Police’s Water Police Directorate. Currently, the inquiry is in its preliminary phase, focusing on interviews and reconstructing the sequence of events to identify potential culpability.

As of September 30, divers and beach recovery teams have found four more bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to 78, with 57 individuals still unaccounted for. The challenging recovery efforts have seen many bodies retrieved from the wreck, which is upside down and situated in an area with strong currents, complicating the search. The condition of the recovered remains is deteriorating as the search continues, with 27 victims yet to be identified.
