The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and Siemens have joined forces to advance digital twin technology aimed at improving the assessment of leak behavior in ammonia-fueled vessels. The trio has formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that focuses on merging computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with digital twin technology. This integration is designed to swiftly predict ammonia dispersion in the event of a leak.
HD KSOE will spearhead the development of ammonia safety systems and conduct related experimental research. Siemens will contribute its expertise in simulation analysis and digital twin technology, while ABS will provide a safety assessment methodology centered on these digital twins. This collaborative effort is expected to enhance the evaluation of various leakage and accident scenarios during the early stages of vessel design.
The initiative highlights a broader trend in the shipbuilding industry, where the integration of artificial intelligence and digital technologies is transforming operational methodologies. The partnership aims to accelerate research and development efforts, ultimately ensuring the safety and engineering reliability of next-generation vessels. Through this collaboration, the companies seek to bolster safety validation for ammonia-fueled vessels and promote digital innovation within the global marine sector.
