NorthStandard is collaborating with the maritime welfare charity Sailors’ Society to enhance the emotional wellbeing of seafarers through the launch of Sea Mate, an innovative online mental health awareness training program. This initiative will be unveiled during the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, 2026, as part of NorthStandard’s My Mind Matters initiative, emphasizing the essential role seafarers play in global trade.

Sea Mate provides comprehensive onboard emotional support by training seafarers to become Wellbeing Officers. These officers are equipped to identify signs of distress, offer peer support, and address challenges faced at sea. Given the unique pressures of maritime life, including isolation and fatigue, the program is particularly relevant in light of recent geopolitical tensions and crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which can elevate stress levels among crews.

The two-day remote training is available in multiple languages and focuses on practical skills needed to manage emotional distress. Beyond the training, participants gain access to ongoing professional guidance, peer networks, and 24/7 crisis response services. NorthStandard emphasizes that this partnership is vital for fostering a culture of wellbeing among seafarers, which is linked to safer and more efficient operations.

Colin Gilespie, Global Head of Loss Prevention at NorthStandard, highlighted the importance of this initiative in today’s maritime environment, stating that it equips crews with essential tools to enhance resilience. Members of NorthStandard can access one free course annually for up to 16 seafarers, along with discounted rates for additional training, allowing for broader implementation of wellbeing support across fleets. Sailors’ Society CEO Sara Baade expressed optimism about the potential impact of this partnership, noting that it could lead to thousands of new Wellbeing Officers who will significantly contribute to the safety and support of their colleagues at sea.
