Mumbai recently hosted a high-level session organized by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) to address the Gulf Crisis and its impacts on global maritime trade. The meeting brought together senior officials, maritime industry stakeholders, and representatives from prominent shipping lines to discuss the challenges arising from the evolving geopolitical landscape and assess India’s maritime readiness. Notable participants included Shri Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), and other key figures in the maritime sector.

During the session, Shri Nebu Oommen, Deputy Chief Ship Surveyor and Senior Deputy Director General (Technical), presented a comprehensive analysis of the Gulf Crisis. His presentation detailed the operational strategies and collaborative efforts initiated by the MoPSW and DG Shipping to maintain the flow of maritime trade amid disruptions. Participants emphasized the critical importance of safety and welfare for Indian seafarers, especially in sensitive areas, as well as the need for stable supply chains and uninterrupted movement of essential goods.

Additionally, discussions recognized ships as vital strategic assets in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
