The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the World Maritime University (WMU) to establish the C.P. Srivastava Chair at the institution. This collaboration aims to enhance the partnership between India and WMU, focusing on maritime research, education, and capacity building.
Named in honor of Dr. C.P. Srivastava, who was the longest-serving Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Chair recognizes his significant contributions to maritime governance. Srivastava was instrumental in founding the WMU and the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), highlighting his impact on maritime education and policy.
The C.P. Srivastava Chair will prioritize research and education in various maritime domains, including governance, safety, law, sustainable shipping, ocean governance, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation. This initiative seeks to foster a platform for knowledge development on critical issues affecting the global maritime sector.
The MoA signing event was attended by key officials, including the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the WMU President, and senior representatives from various maritime organizations. The establishment of the Chair is expected to enhance institutional collaboration between India and WMU, reinforcing India’s role in global maritime governance and promoting a safe and sustainable maritime environment.
