NIMASA and ITF Join Forces to Boost Seafarers’ Welfare
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has solidified its collaboration with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement focuses on enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of Nigerian seafarers and cadets through comprehensive training, awareness initiatives, and capacity-building efforts.
This significant development was highlighted during a three-day event titled “Seafarers’ and Cadets’ Wellbeing Awareness and Train the Trainers Programme.” The program, which centered on the theme “Stress: Understanding, Early Management and Coping,” was organized by NIMASA in partnership with the ITF. The initiative aims to equip participants with essential skills to manage stress effectively.
NIMASA’s Director General emphasized that this partnership is a crucial step towards integrating wellbeing education into maritime training curricula. The goal is to ensure that the mental health of seafarers is prioritized and that wellbeing becomes an integral part of their preparations for life at sea. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health support within the maritime industry, aiming to foster a healthier working environment for those at sea.
