The Philippine government is intensifying its legal assistance for three Filipino seafarers currently held in Algeria due to a drug-related incident in 2023. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is collaborating with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to bolster the defense for these crew members, ensuring they receive adequate legal representation.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized that the DMW is maintaining ongoing communication with the families of the detained seafarers and providing necessary support as the legal proceedings unfold. The three men were part of a group of eight Filipino crew members arrested in July 2023 after authorities found 35.8 kilograms of cocaine on a commercial vessel docked in Algiers. While five crew members have been released, the three remain in custody.

Government officials have been visiting the detainees to monitor their conditions and ensure their well-being. Cacdac noted that authorities are evaluating potential legal strategies, including plea options that could influence the outcome of their appeal. The government plans to offer recommendations based on its findings, continuing its efforts to secure the welfare and resolution of the case for the detained seafarers.
