The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) announced plans to enhance its operational capabilities by expanding its fleet to 200 ships and 100 aircraft, aimed at bolstering maritime security across the nation’s waters. In a statement on X, the ICG emphasized its commitment to maintaining vigilant surveillance over India’s maritime frontiers through continuous deployment of its current fleet. This expansion is intended to create a formidable defense network, safeguarding the vast maritime zones of India.
Currently, the ICG operates a diverse fleet of 155 advanced vessels, including interceptor boats and hovercraft, complemented by 82 modern rotary surveillance aircraft. To discuss future fleet enhancements, the ICG recently held a conference titled “Extending Capability for Distant Horizons” at its headquarters in New Delhi. This event brought together major shipbuilders and design firms to collaborate on developing new platforms for the expanded fleet.
Among the ongoing projects, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd is constructing six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, designed for extended missions with an endurance of 5,000 nautical miles. These vessels will support sustained operations at sea, featuring advanced technology such as AI-based predictive maintenance systems and remotely piloted drones. Additionally, the ICG is acquiring modern Air Cushion Vehicles to replace its aging fleet, further modernizing its operations.
