The IMEQ ASSESSMENT CENTER has launched a Psychological First Aid (PFA) guidance manual designed to assist Masters and officers in supporting crew wellbeing during stressful onboard incidents, particularly in high-risk areas like the Strait of Hormuz. This manual offers a structured framework for implementing brief interventions that stabilize crew members after distressing events, ensuring effective communication, and fostering crew cohesion and operational safety.

The manual is not clinical but serves as a practical resource for maritime leaders facing human factors challenges while maintaining safety and operational continuity. Contributions from various industry and medical experts, including Health4Crew and the UK P&I Club, were instrumental in its development, highlighting a collective commitment to integrating mental health into maritime safety.

Marine psychologist Alexandra S. Kaloulis noted that in maritime contexts, stress often accumulates gradually, leading to common issues such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, and irritability among seafarers. The guide emphasizes the importance of early intervention and outlines practical actions for Masters, such as maintaining calmness, providing clear updates, and monitoring for signs of psychological distress.

Additionally, the manual recommends fostering a supportive environment by encouraging communication, ensuring basic needs are met, and utilizing a buddy system to prevent isolation among distressed crew members. By prioritizing mental health, maritime leaders can enhance overall safety and operational performance.
