The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE), managed by NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML), has achieved international certification from the UK Nautical Institute. This recognition aims to bolster Nigeria’s maritime training capabilities and enhance the competitiveness of its seafarers on a global scale. Abdulkadir Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of NSML, announced this significant milestone at a press conference in Lagos, emphasizing that it would solidify Nigeria’s standing in the maritime industry and validate the quality of its training programs.
Ahmed highlighted that this certification will improve the employability of Nigerian maritime professionals, allowing them greater access to opportunities in international shipping and offshore operations. It also aims to reduce dependence on foreign training institutions, fostering local capacity development while enhancing safety and professionalism in the maritime sector. MCOE is now the only institute in West Africa accredited by the Nautical Institute for Dynamic Positioning (DP) training, offering key programs such as simulator and vessel maintenance courses.
The certification further validates the quality and relevance of MCOE’s training offerings, which serve maritime professionals not only from Nigeria but also from West Africa and beyond. Equipped with advanced simulators and modern infrastructure, the center focuses on continuous professional development through a diverse range of mandatory and specialized courses. Ahmed noted that this achievement builds on previous accreditations, including ISO 9001:2015 and DNV-ST-0029 standards.
Looking to the future, Ahmed expressed NSML’s commitment to enhancing the center’s capabilities, expanding access to maritime training for young Nigerians, and fostering partnerships that align with global best practices. The overarching goal is to establish a maritime institution in Nigeria that garners respect and recognition within the international maritime community, ultimately contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy and creating job opportunities.
