Wärtsilä has provided an advanced simulation suite for Novatug’s new training center in Terneuzen, Netherlands, aimed at enhancing tug operations and specialized master training. Developed in collaboration with Novatug, part of Multraship Towage & Salvage, the suite features full mission simulators, mixed reality setups, an instructor station, and a debriefing area. It also includes custom digital models, notably the Carrousel Rave Tug (CRT), designed for specialized tug master training. This order was confirmed in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The simulation suite offers high-fidelity modeling of the CRT, improving control over assisted vessels during port maneuvers. The CRT addresses the challenges posed by large cargo vessels, enhancing steering and braking in confined spaces while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The Wärtsilä simulators facilitate professional development and competency training, enabling tug masters to gain proficiency in operating both the CRT and other modern tugs in a safe environment.
Leendert Muller, Managing Director of Multraship Towage & Salvage, emphasized the importance of Wärtsilä’s simulation expertise in creating a realistic training atmosphere. He noted that this partnership will enhance safety and efficiency in tug operations globally. The CRT’s patented Carrousel towing system allows for controlled towing forces, minimizing capsizing risks and enabling safer handling of assisted ships.
Johan Ekvall, Director of Simulation & Training at Wärtsilä Marine, highlighted the significance of collaboration among maritime stakeholders for the industry’s future. He pointed out that innovative vessels must be complemented with adequate training, and that simulation provides a crucial platform for closing skill gaps and preparing tug masters for evolving operational challenges. With over 30 years of experience in digital vessel modeling, Wärtsilä aims to bolster crew safety and improve port operations.
