Oil Spill Leads to Beach Closures and Environmental Emergency in Spain

An oil spill off the coast of Gran Canaria has led to the closure of multiple beaches and prompted the declaration of an environmental emergency. The incident unfolded during a vessel’s refueling at La Luz port in Las Palmas, resulting in the release of up to three metric tons of low-sulphur IFO 180 oil. An oil slick approximately two kilometers long and 400 meters wide has formed and is moving south toward the municipality of Telde. The identity of the responsible vessel has yet to be revealed.

In response to the spill, local authorities acted quickly to safeguard the coastline. Beaches such as La Restinga, Palos, San Borondon, and El Baranquillo have been closed as a precautionary measure. Emergency services have mobilized helicopters, drones, and maritime rescue boats to contain the spill and mitigate its impact on the environment. Telde’s mayor, Juan Antonio Pena, has voiced serious concerns about the extent of pollution and the necessity for accountability to ensure such incidents do not recur.

The oil spill poses a significant threat to a nearby drinking water treatment facility, but ongoing efforts have so far kept the oil from reaching land. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further environmental damage.
