A tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile while navigating the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, resulting in a fire onboard, according to a report from UK Maritime Trade Operations. The incident was reported at 1750 GMT by a third party. Fortunately, the crew members were confirmed safe, but details regarding the damage to the tanker and any potential environmental consequences remain unclear.
Reports from Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency indicated that the supertanker, which has a capacity of 2.5 million barrels, was struck approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) off the coast of Oman and was engulfed in flames. Fars News stated that the vessel was traveling on an “unauthorized route” through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
The situation has raised concerns about maritime safety in the region, particularly given the tanker’s reported deviation from approved navigation paths. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further to determine the cause and assess the implications for both the vessel and the surrounding environment.
